Doctor Who Fan Made Adventure: Winter 2023 Update

WELCOME!!!

Welcome to my first Devlog post for the Doctor Who Fan Made Adventure game!

As it's been well over a year since the original demo was launched, I wanted to provide more of a detailed update on where things are at with the project and what you can expect to see in the future.

First of all, thank you so much to everyone who has played the demo, commented on the page and given me a follow. It is really appreciated. It all started out in August 2021 as a mild curiosity of pixel art and animation, and now it's turned into quite a great spirit of adventure!

WHAT IS THE CURRENT PROJECT STATUS?

For those who may be wondering if I'm still developing the game, I can confirm that it's very much alive and kicking. However, progress has been much slower than I would've liked. It took 10 months to make the demo, and that was me working on it pretty much full-time. Since the demo released I've had to balance working on the full game with a full-time job and being a parent...so I've often had to scrabble around for spare time in evenings and at weekends. The plan is still to continue development towards a full release.

HOW LONG IS THE FULL GAME?

The game will consist of 6 levels in total: The prologue level from the demo, and then 5 'episodes' that continue the story. Each level averaging about 20 minutes in length. This is not a big game at all, and one that players should be able to get through comfortably in one sitting, which was always the intention. This is a game I want all Doctor Who fans to enjoy, regardless of age and gaming experience.

WHAT ARE THE LEVELS?

Although I'm not ready to reveal what all of the levels are, I can share the titles to some of them:

WHAT'S THE STORY?

I don' want to give too much away (spoilers!), but the story follows the 10th Doctor in a period set between seasons 3 and 4 of the show. The Doctor reunites with K9 in a quest to rescue the 4th Doctor, who has become trapped in a Gallifreyan Time Scoop (again). Equipped with a broken Temporal Compass, the Doctor and K9 must travel through time and space to find parts to repair the Compass, and ultimately use it to find the missing 4th Doctor.

NEW STUFF!

  • The Doctor can now run! Lots of players asked for the ability to be able to run, so it's now been added to the full game.
  • New Sonic Screwdriver design. I wasn't happy with the original design for the Sonic, so we now have a bigger, more detailed version of the device to control on screen.
  • New mechanics for the Sonic Screwdriver are planned to add more variety to gameplay.
  • K9 will be a playable character that players can switch to when required. A new teleport ability allows players to summon K9 with the Sonic Screwdriver at times when he is needed during gameplay.

WHAT'S NEXT?
I'm currently working on Episodes II and III simultaneously, and I'll be able to share much more on each of those in the New Year. Episode I is pretty much complete now, and features the 10th Doctor working with the Paternoster Gang to solve a murder mystery onboard a 19th Century train...

WHEN IS THE FULL GAME LAUNCHING?
I'm really reluctant to set a date on this, because quite simply I don't know when the game will be finished. The aim will be to release sometime in 2024, but that is only a tentative estimate given where the project is at.

THAT'S ALL FOR NOW...
Hopefully you've enjoyed this update on the game. I'm really excited to share more of the game in 2024, but for now I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

Allons-y!
